(This Is) Air documents Nic Brunsdon's 2023 NGV Architecture Commission of the same name, a poignant installation that draws attention to one of the universal and defining features of life on earth: breathing air. The commission utilises air as a building material to take form as a large sphere structure, morphing and changing throughout the day as it expands and then releases air in a natural rhythm. It reflects on our connection to and dependency on this finite resource whose quality is becoming increasingly affected.
With a foreword from David Neustein, an introduction by Jessica Kwok (associate curator, Storefront for Art and Architecture), new writing from Mark Jacques and photographs by Ben Hosking, (This Is) Air offers timely consideration of urgent ecological, civic and political questions about the act of breathing and the relationship between architecture and experiences of air.
These contributions sit alongside conversations and addresses about the commission with insights from Nic Brunsdon, Dr Timothy Moore, Ewan McEoin and members of the technical team, as well as project materials and documentation, reflecting on the work as both process and product, architecture and art, experiment and triumph.
